It's Bastille Day!

Bonjour et joyeux quatorze juillet! I'm mainly posting this here, because the storming of the Bastille happened during the eighteenth century during the French Revolution.

Today (14/7) is the French national holiday (La fête nationale), also known as Bastille Day due to its ties to the Storming of the Bastille on 14 July 1789, over 200 years ago. The celebrations occur all throughout France and even in other countries, such as Belgium, Canada, the United Kingdom, the United States, and more.

One of the biggest celebrations, the oldest (since 1880) and largest regular military parade in Europe, occurs at the Champs-Élysées in Paris, from the Arc de Triomphe to the Place de la Concorde. At night, fireworks light up the night sky, including the Eiffel Tower (Tour Eiffel).

There are plenty of events and places, even in the states, to commemorate this important French holiday! So have fun and celebrate!

American Duchess Blog

Hallo everyone!

Pardon me for the long hiatus. I find that I am extremely interested in eighteenth century fashion (It's too bad I can't sew :( I would like to start at some point so I can make my own) . But there is one blog that I absolutely love. The lady makes beautiful dresses and shoes, and her costumes are so lovely! Check her blog out at http://americanduchess.blogspot.com

Revolutionary America and the Culper Ring

Finally, the first informational post!

The Culper Ring played a pivotal role during the American Revolution. If not for this ring of spies, Britian might have won the war and much sooner, too. The spy ring was under the command of General George Washington himself. Important people in the ring were Benjamin Tallmadge, the leader of Connecticut dragoons, Abraham Woodhull,  Caleb Brewster, Robert Townsend, and others. The first three were all from the town of Setauket on Long Island.

The ring brought information about British positions and status to General Washington, and also foiled the attempt by General Benedict Arnold and Major John André to put West Point into British hands.

A new show on AMC called Turn depicts the Culper Spy Ring, its formation and what it did. The show depicts methods the ring used for spying.

Good Day! How do you do?

That is a typical eighteenth century greeting. The focus of this blog is everything about the eighteenth century, including fashion, life, monarchs, stories, wars, and more. We will also look at the portrayal of the eighteenth century in the modern day. And without further ado, let us begin!

Your Humble Servant,
Marquis de La Fayette
